I'm going to start this review by saying that I never really intended to read any of the June Yaoi novels despite my obsession with boys love. From my limited experience (browsing through Japanese BL novels) the translation often leaves much to be desired and the dialog often sounds especially forced to western ears. While visiting LA for anime expo however, I found myself in front of a huge Yaoi sale and decided to give in and try reading three of these translated novels. One of the titles that I chose was Body Language written by Aki Morimoto.

If you were to judge Body Language based on its cover you would be entirely right. Body language is a light, sexy and sweet read that illustrates to its core that even if you think you know someone you may not know them quite as well as you think.

Kanae is known around school as the cool beauty, easy enough that he'll get into bed with anyone who asks, men included. Rather than being completely distraught by these rumors he tries to take advantage of them by suggesting that he and his best friend Yuichi sleep together. Of course Yuichi the school playboy has no idea that Kanae is in fact a virgin and goes for the suggestion a little too eagerly. From there their secret romance (read fuck buddy) relationship ensues. And boy does it ensue fast.
In fact the entire story moves fast. In a matter of pages they are beginning their heated first encounter and after that it only gets hotter… and hotter, and yes, even more frequent. You may think that I'm exaggerating about the amount of sex in this book but I'm not at all. For a book that is only two hundred and fifty pages there are more sex scenes than I thought were possible and despite the fact that it starts out rather intense—and a little ridiculous—it gets even more so. The locations and ways they do the deed however help to keep it interesting and even if it wasn't so varied, miss Morimoto really knows how to turn the heat up and make things uncomfortably sexy. Although one thing she definitely doesn't know is accuracy.

There are several serious issues that may be hard to look past when reading the sex scenes in this book (which comprise the majority of the novel)for example the lack of lubrication, which is pretty typical of women writing m/m sex scenes, heck I've done it myself for simplicity's sake. However there are other things, impossible things and some other very unlikely things that may make you blink in confusion. The most notable of which being that Kanae's rear end acts a lot like a vagina, if you know what I mean. Perhaps Aki Morimoto wrote that little aspect in to account for the lack of lubrication, but it's still pretty...odd.

If you're willing to over look that (it is a Yaoi novel after all) then there is only one other major issue that this book has. The formatting is incredibly disappointing. In many places there are completely unnecessary spaces giving the impression that there is a change of scene taking place when there is none. It can be a little bit distracting until you get use to it, but all in all it gives the book a rather unprofessional feel to it which is a real shame because the story itself is quite fun.

True this may not be an epic literary piece, but in my opinion we have enough of those. Sometimes its nice to read a book that distracts you and carries you away for a little bit of good natured fun and in my opinion Body Language does just that. Despite all of the little problems that the print and story may have, Miss Morimoto has a very good grasp on her characters. They feel very real, especially Yuichi who is such a boy that its amusing.

If you're looking for fun, hot, smut with two lovable boys then I greatly recommend that you read Body Language and give this story a shot. You may end up like I did, deprived of sleep and still staying awake on a red eye flight to eagerly find out how this sexy love story progresses.

Finished at Last!

I finally finished writing my novel Oaf Prince. I'm so excited by this that its hard to explain. I've written many things before but never with the intent of publishing it. Even my anthology (Boys Love Library) was written for fun until finally I had a little collection of stories that I decided might be publishable.

Oaf Prince upon completion is still a short 55000 words long but with editing and re-writes (and the parts that I skipped:P)I'm guessing the end product will be closer to 70000 words long.

Hurray!

Really, I've been walking on air for days now. It's such a great feeling that I'm sure only getting it published will beat out.

So my cute little book has been available for a little while now.

I really like how it turned out. The cover especially which is a photo of a test copy arranged so that you can read the title. :smile:

I initially put it together as a place to store the many shorts that I had floating around doing nothing. For that reason it doesn't really have a steady flow or theme. There are two very dark stories i can think of off the top of my head, a couple simple ones, a couple literary ones(in my opinion) and of course there is lots of fluff sprinkled throughout.

I haven't had an all out review given yet aside from a few reviews given to me of specific stories but so far the feed back has been very positive. I think the light-hearted/non-serious aspect really helps on that front.

I have had exactly two copies of my book sold so far. That doesn't seem like much, i know, but to me, oh my god, I was walking on air when I saw that! I'm serious, I told everyone I knew!

I have another anthology in mind with only supernatural stories, but I should probably get this one selling a bit more before I jump into that. ><;
